Armes Gap to Lookout Tower

Armes Gap to Lookout Tower provides the shortest approach to the historic fire tower on Frozen Head Mountain's summit, beginning at an intermediate elevation and ascending steeply through the upper forest zones of Frozen Head State Park. The Armes Gap trailhead can be reached by road, reducing the total elevation gain compared to approaches from the park headquarters below. Even so, the 1,200-foot gain over 1.8 miles makes this a genuinely strenuous climb with little respite from the steep grade. The upper forest encountered on this approach is particularly impressive, with large yellow birch, American beech, and red spruce appearing near the summit in a community more reminiscent of the southern Appalachians than the Cumberland Plateau. The historic lookout tower at the summit dates to the Civilian Conservation Corps era of the 1930s and represents one of the best-preserved examples of CCC infrastructure in the Tennessee state park system. The summit views encompass a vast panorama of the Cumberland Plateau and, on exceptionally clear days, the Great Smoky Mountains to the southeast. No entrance fee is charged. This route is popular with locals who want the summit experience with slightly less total effort than the full tower trail from the main trailhead.
