Lake of the Clouds Escarpment

The Lake of the Clouds Escarpment Trail follows the dramatic quartzite ridgeline that crowns Michigan's Upper Peninsula, delivering the single most iconic panorama in the state's park system. The path begins at the Lake of the Clouds overlook on M-107, where nearly every visitor stops to photograph the mirror-like lake cradled in its glacially carved basin far below. From the overlook parking area the Escarpment Trail heads east along the rim, rising and dipping across exposed bedrock outcrops draped in reindeer lichen and blueberry. Pitch pines and paper birch frame constant views south across the Carp River valley toward the vast interior wilderness. At roughly mile two the trail reaches Cloud Peak, the highest point on the ridge at 1,958 feet, where Lake Superior becomes visible on clear days as a silver band on the northern horizon. The quartzite underfoot dates to the Proterozoic era, roughly 1.1 billion years old, and weathers into rust-orange slabs that glow warmly in late-afternoon light. Return the same way, watching the lake change color as afternoon shadows fill the basin. Fall color peaks mid-September, turning the hardwood slopes below into a tapestry of orange, crimson, and gold that rivals any New England display.
