South Platte River Trail – Chattfield Sp
South Platte River Trail winds through the heart of Chatfield State Park, the most visited state park in Colorado, tracing the banks of the South Platte River through a lush cottonwood riparian corridor where wildlife thrives just minutes from the Denver metropolitan area. The 6-mile easy loop follows the river as it meanders through the park, passing willow thickets and open gravel bars where great blue herons stand motionless in the shallows and mule deer browse the waterside vegetation at dawn and dusk. The paved trail surface makes this an excellent year-round option for walkers, joggers, cyclists, and families with strollers, while the natural surroundings provide a genuine sense of escape from the surrounding suburbs. Chatfield Reservoir is visible through the cottonwood canopy in multiple sections, and the Front Range mountains loom dramatically on the western horizon. The park hosts one of Colorados most celebrated great blue heron rookeries, and dozens of nesting pairs can be observed from designated viewing areas along the trail each spring. The $10 vehicle fee is required year-round. Dogs on leash are welcome throughout. Restroom facilities, picnic areas, and drinking water are available at multiple points along the route, making this a very comfortable outing for visitors of all experience levels.
