River Bend Trail – Guadalupe River Sp
The River Bend Trail at Guadalupe River State Park follows the Guadalupe River through a series of four crossings that must be waded on foot, creating one of the more adventurous and physically engaging trail experiences available in the Texas Hill Country. The crossings range from ankle-to-thigh deep depending on recent rainfall and seasonal flow, adding an element of river navigation that transforms a simple walk into a memorable water adventure.
The bald cypress forest lining the river corridor is exceptional, with ancient specimens creating an overhead canopy of fine green needles that filters summer heat into welcome shade. The river bends traversed by the trail provide diverse habitat including deep pools, shallow riffles, and exposed limestone ledges where different species concentrate. Guadalupe bass hold in the faster current below river bends while soft-shell turtles inhabit the calmer pools. Belted kingfishers are constant companions along the entire route. The canyon wrens calling from the limestone outcrops provide the soundtrack of Texas canyon country. River otters have been documented along the Guadalupe in increasing numbers as water quality has improved over recent decades. Fall color from the cypress and sycamore trees makes October and November particularly scenic. The four river crossings make this trail inadvisable during flood conditions; checking the river gauge before departure is strongly recommended for safety.
