Rock Climbing Area Loop – Palisades Sp
The Rock Climbing Area Loop at Palisades State Park provides a short but engaging circuit around the concentrated area of Sioux Quartzite formations that has made this park one of the most beloved rock climbing destinations in the Midwest. The quartzite walls, ranging from 20 to 60 feet in height, offer dozens of established routes ranging from beginner-friendly top-rope climbs to challenging crack systems that attract experienced trad climbers from across the region. The trail weaves between the base of the formations and their tops, providing both access to the cliff base for climbing setup and elevated perspectives from the quartzite rim.
Even for non-climbers, the loop offers a fascinating close-up study of the ancient rock, which displays dramatic features including cross-bedding structures formed in Precambrian tidal flats, iron oxide staining that creates vivid color banding in shades of pink, red, and purple, and the deeply polished surfaces carved by the glacial meltwater floods that shaped the present creek channel. Several natural arches and overhangs along the loop are striking geological features in their own right. The trail surface includes stretches of open quartzite slabs that require careful foot placement, particularly when wet. Hikers share the area with climbers on busy spring and fall weekends; helmets are advisable in the areas directly below established climbing routes.
