Ridgway Reservoir Loop – Ridgway Sp
The Ridgway Reservoir Loop delivers one of the most spectacular easy hikes in all of Colorado, circumnavigating the stunning blue waters of Ridgway Reservoir with a constant backdrop of San Juan Mountain 14ers reflected perfectly in the calm surface on still mornings. At 8.5 miles with only 300 feet of total elevation gain, this flat lakeside loop is accessible to hikers of nearly all fitness levels while delivering scenery that rivals anything in the state. Mount Sneffels, the Cimarron Ridge, and the Uncompahgre Plateau frame every vista, and the changing light throughout the day transforms the landscape from golden at sunrise to deep purple at dusk. Osprey, great blue herons, and white pelicans patrol the reservoir year-round, while bald eagles are common winter visitors. The surrounding desert shrubland of sage and rabbitbrush provides habitat for pronghorn antelope and mule deer that can often be spotted near the waters edge. Kayakers and paddleboarders share the reservoir, adding colorful movement to the scenery. The $10 vehicle entrance fee is collected at the main gate. Dogs are permitted on leash. Restrooms and picnic facilities are available near the trailhead at the Dutch Charlie area.
