Wilderness Drive and Bog Trail – Itasca Sp
The Wilderness Drive and Bog Trail combines Itasca's most scenic forest road with a dedicated footpath through the park's interior bog, providing an extended tour of the old-growth pine forest and peatland ecosystems that make this one of Minnesota's most ecologically valuable parks. The trail departs from the Wilderness Drive parking area and immediately enters the park's most intact old-growth red and white pine stand, where the canopy reaches 100 feet and the forest floor is carpeted in bunchberry, starflower, and wood sorrel. The pines here were protected from logging when the park was established in 1891, making them some of the oldest trees in Minnesota with ages up to 250 years. The bog section of the trail is accessed via a wooden boardwalk that extends into a classic northern Minnesota sphagnum bog, elevated over the saturated peat surface. Carnivorous plants including sundews and pitcher plants grow in the open sphagnum mats, and the insectivorous adaptations of these species are explained on interpretive signs. Black spruce and tamarack ring the bog margin, their trunks draped in old-man's beard lichen. The bog is an excellent habitat for yellow-bellied flycatcher, Connecticut warbler, and LeConte's sparrow, species that breed in this specialized habitat and rarely occur elsewhere in accessible public land.
